Typical Contractor Scenario
Click Image to enlargeThey are licensed, insured and "EXPERTS" at their job. "Been doing it for years" and their policy is "I get paid when the job is finished". "I never take a dime until the job is done and you are completely satisfied", he says. as he spits tabacco juice into his coffee cup.
Job starts out great, Progress is slow but appears to be good.
Then....
Contractor experiences unscheduled (unusual) delays that take him away from the work.
Contractor gets sick once or twice. His car breaks down. The babysitter doesn't show.
Contractor has personal issues that require him to leave the job in the middle of the day.
Contractor claims personal problems, unexpected expenses ( kid is sick, Rent is due, ) that require an advance.
Advance is paid after all he is a "good guy experiencing a few problems". Life does that.
Contractor advance appears to solve problems and work starts to progress again.
A few days pass and works stops again, Contractor claims he is in over his head due to unexpected delays and expenses and cannot finish the job without more advances and an increase in the contracted amount due.
Contractor informs you he will be gone a few days on another job . He needs to make some money before he can complete your job. ( The one you already paid him to complete)
Contractor threatens to pull out of the job unless more money is paid. Reasoning is that the job took longer than expected and he can't work for nothing.
In the end
The result is a half done job. Constant threats to retaliate unless payment is made. Materials disappear. Contractor's cell phone suddenly never answers.
The owner is left with a few unsavory choices.
1. Loose your money and move on and pay someone to come in and fix and finish the job ( In the end it will cost you a lot less for this choice)
or
2. Pay the contractor more and more money to finish the now poorly done job. ( Most likely the job will never be finished) and (you will have to choose #1 in the end.)
AND .. it is all YOUR fault : What you did wrong was;
1. Paid the contractor "NOT" according to the agreed upon contract
2. Gave him an advance when he appeared to be in trouble
3. Trusted that he knew what he was doing. ( He knows exactly what he is doing and it is not the job!!)
AFTER ALL You are very selfish
"it's unfair to make someone work for nothing " the contractor will tell you.
No one should have to finish a job AFTER you pay them for the job in advance!
You gave them an advance and they screw up the job and you should pay them to redo the job they have already been paid to do?
This makes perfectly good sense to the contractor!!!!
After all
He is the "EXPERT"
at
DECEPTION
